Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is set to lead a commemoration service for slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during Friday prayers in Tehran. Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli strike on the militant group’s underground headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs a week ago. Alongside Nasrallah, a senior commander from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Abbas Nilforoushan, was also killed in the attack.
The upcoming Friday prayers will also honor the memory of Abbas Nilforoushan and other Hezbollah commanders who lost their lives in the strike. This event marks a significant moment as it brings together the Iranian leadership to pay tribute to those who have fallen in the line of duty.
This will not be the first time Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has led Friday prayers in such circumstances. In January 2020, he presided over prayers after Iran retaliated against a US army base in Iraq following the killing of revered Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani.
The commemoration service is scheduled to commence on Friday morning local time at the Grand Mosque in Tehran. The event is expected to draw a large gathering of mourners and supporters who wish to pay their respects to the fallen leaders and express solidarity with their cause.
