Tensions have escalated between Tehran and Washington following the killing of Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniyeh, with Tehran pointing fingers at the US and criticizing it as a staunch ally of Israel. Iran's foreign ministry condemned the White House, accusing it of supporting and aiding the Zionist regime in the occupation and genocide of Palestinians.
The Iranian foreign ministry labeled the assassination of Haniyeh as a heinous act of terrorism and emphasized Iran's right to respond to what it deemed an aggressive action against its sovereignty. The ministry called on international actors who support the rights of the Palestinian people to denounce the killing.
US-Israel relations have come under scrutiny, with the US maintaining its status as a key ally of Israel despite expressing concerns over the civilian casualties resulting from Israel's bombing campaign in Gaza. The US has continued to provide substantial military aid to Israel.
In response to Haniyeh's killing, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the US was not aware of or involved in the incident. Israel, on the other hand, has not officially commented on the strike but had previously vowed to eliminate Hamas following attacks on October 7.
