IPL auction 2023: When is it, how it works, retained players, budgets and English stars involved today

The auction for the 2023 IPL gets underway today.

Gujarat Titans are the defending champions after securing the title in their first season, beating Rajasthan Royals in a final attended by more than 100,000 spectators.

Similiar excitement can be expected in next year’s tournament, and that starts with the auction as the final spots in the squads are filled.

When is the IPL auction 2023?

The IPL auction for next year’s tournament takes place today in Kochi, getting underway at 9:30am GMT.

That will complete each of the ten squads and turn attention to the tournament itself, which is set to begin in March 2023.

How does the IPL auction work?

Each franchise can have a maximum of 25 in their squad and a minimum of 18, of which no more than eight can be overseas players.

Teams have already made decisions over who they have opted to retain, meaning the franchises have varying numbers of places to fill and different budgets as a result.

Delhi Capitals for example can pick up five more players, two of them overseas, while Sunrisers Hyderabad have 13 spots to fill if they choose to do so.

There are 405 players entered into the auction, though there are only 87 slots to fill, including 30 overseas players. Each player has a base price that they cannot be sold for less than.
