Surya's 35-ball 83 helps Mumbai win by six wickets with 21 balls to spare
MUMBAI: Not often do you see Suryakumar Yadav adopt a cautious approach to start his innings. On Tuesday, with Mumbai Indians in a dicey position, Surya first steadied the innings before launching into the Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) attack to guide MI to a comfortable six-wicket win at the jam-packed Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

When Surya walked into bat, MI had got a healthy start but saw Ishan Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma dismissed within the space of three balls to Wanindu Hasaranga (2-53) in the fifth over. He could have taken the attack to the RCB bowlers with one over of powerplay still to be bowled, but he chose otherwise and along with Nehal Wadhera, he decided to build the innings.
In the end, Surya's 35-ball 83 (7x4; 6x6) - his fourth half-century in six matches - and Wadhera's (52*, 34; 4x4, 3x6) second fifty on the trot helped them put on a 66-ball 140-run partnership for the third wicket which guided MI to a comfortable win with 3.3 overs to spare. The win moved them to third in the standings with 12 points. More importantly, the early chase improved their run-rate as well.
Surya first showed real signs of aggression off the15th ball he faced when he launched Hasaranga's short one into the deep midwicket stands. That set up Surya for the launch and none of the RCB bowlers were spared.

Then came the big one - the 15th bowled by Hasaranga - who ended up conceding 20 in the over with Surya scoring 15 of them.
In the 16th over bowled by Vyshak, the right-hand batter hit two sixes and a boundary before holing out but by that time he had done his job. At the other end, left-hander Wadhera made sure he didn't play any rash shots and followed Surya's instructions to the T.
Once he had settled down, he also showed why MI have invested in him by playing some solid shots. He was dropped on 15 by Hasaranga and he made RCB pay for it.
Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore recovered from losing Virat Kohli in the first overs of the innings to post 199 for six thanks to skipper Faf du Plessis (65, 41b; 5x4, 3x6), who was dropped in the first over by Nehal Wadhera, and Glenn Maxwell's (68, 33b; 8x4, 4x6) third-wicket partnership of 120 in just 62 balls.
