IPL 2023: Cameron Green's century helps Mumbai Indians chase tough target with ease and reach playoffs

Aussie slams 47-ball 100; Madhwal bags 4/37 as MI chase down SRH's 200 with 12 balls left

MUMBAI: Ahead of a packed summer for Australian cricket, Cameron Green has issued a stern warning to both India and England.

Bought for Rs 17.50 crore by the Mumbai Indians in last December's auction, the 23-year-old sensation, coming into his own after enduring a rather average tournament, smashed a breath-taking century (100 not out, 47b, 8x4, 8x4)-the fastest of the nine hundreds in IPL 2023 and his first in this T20 league in a must-win game for the franchise to turn a 201-run chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday afternoon into a stroll in the park.

It was the sort of knock that must worry India about the threat that this highly talented all-rounder poses as they take on the Aussies in the World Test Championship final from June 7-12 at The Oval in London. With that marquee clash set to be followed by the Ashes, Green's blazing blade would certainly be a cause of concern for England too.

5/10:Bhuvi draws the first blood

Bhuvneshwar Kumar drew the first blood when he dismissed Ishan Kishan (14) in the third over. Rohit got a lifeline in the fifth over when Sanvir Singh dropped a difficult catch at midwicket off Nitish Kumar Reddy.

6/10:Green brings up his fifty off only 20 balls

But Green provided the impetus, as his four boundaries and a couple of sixes took MI to 60/1 after the powerplay. While Green brought up his fifty off only 20 balls, in the ninth over, Rohit was off to a modest start, hitting his first six only on the 22nd ball that he faced.

IANS

7/10:'Lucky' Rohit scores fifty off 31 balls

The MI skipper completed his second fifty of this IPL, off 31 balls, and his second-wicket stand with Green took the total past the 100-run mark. Soon after this, Rohit got another reprieve when Sanvir spilled a regulation catch at cover off Kartik Tyagi.

8/10:Green-Rohit put on a 128-run stand

However, a sensational catch from Reddy had Mayank Dagar celebrating Rohit's wicket wildly in the 14th over. Rohit's 56 came off 37 balls (8x4s, 1x6s), having added 128 off 65 balls with Green.

AFP

Madhwal's four-wicket haul ensured that SRH ended with at least 15 short of what could be considered a par-score on a flat Wankhede track.

MI vs SRH IPL 2023: Cameron Green slams maiden ton as Mumbai beat Hyderabad by 8 wickets

Green's magic ensured that MI was still in the hunt to qualify for the IPL playoffs for the first time since 2020. Apart from the Australian beanpole, skipper Rohit Sharma (56, 37b, 8x4, 1x6), who looks to be finding form at last, and little-known Uttarakhand pacer Akash Madhwal (4-37 in 4 overs) contributed handsomely to the hosts' thumping eight-wicket over the Sunrisers, which saw their Net Run Rate improve marginally to -0. 044 after the conclusion of the league stage for them.

The five-time IPL champions were left twiddling their thumbs anxiously, hoping that the Gujarat Titans beat Royal Challengers Bangalore, which happened thanks to Shubman Gill and they will take on Lucknow Supergiants in the Eliminator on Wednesday. Nothing though should take the sheen off Green's scintillating innings or Madhwal's exceptional bowling in the death overs.

Flying high at 174 for 1 in the 17th over thanks to a 140-run start in just 83 balls between their latest opening pair of Vibrant Sharma (69, 47b, 9x4, 2x6) and Mayank Agarwal (83, 46b, 8x4, 4x6), SRH looked set for a total of 225-plus, before Madhwal took the sting out of their slog overs.

A promising prospect, the 29-year-old took the scalps of Mayank (caught behind off a short ball), the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen (18, bowled while trying to slog the ball across the line) and Harry Brook (bowled off a peach of an inswinging yorker off the first ball).
