Iowa Athletics Department Reveals Details of Sports Gambling Investigation

The Iowa athletics department released information Monday regarding a sports wagering investigation that involved multiple teams on campus. The news comes after a report about the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission launching its own probe into the school’s baseball team regarding the suspension of multiple players ahead of a  series against Ohio State.

In its release, Iowa noted that it had received information about 26 players across various teams—including baseball, footballmen’s basketball, men’s track and field and men’s wrestling—as well as one full-time athletics department employee. The school was notified of possible NCAA rules violations surrounding online sports wagering on May 2.

Four players were suspended from Iowa’s baseball team ahead of the series against the Buckeyes: infielder Keaton Anthony, pitcher Jacob Henderson, catcher Ben Tallman and redshirt freshman Gehrig Christensen. The school said Monday that it had hired outside counsel to help with the investigative process, and had alerted the NCAA of potential violations.

Iowa’s release comes on the same day that Iowa State revealed it had begun a sports gambling inquiry into approximately 15 players on various teams that could represent a violation of NCAA rules. This comes after the Alabama baseball program fired head coach Brad Bohannon last week after he was implicated in suspicious betting activity.
