iOS 18 Is Out Now — Here’s Why Folks Are Worried It’ll Be A ‘Field Day’ For Cheaters

Apple users today are rejoicing, as the tech giant is releasing the newest update to the iPhone Operating System (iOS) to countless phones. However, one feature on iOS 18 has raised alarms, with some people concerned it may enable cheaters.

It’s that time of year again, when iPhone users around the world are blessed with a bunch of new stuff to mess around with, and this year Apple is boasting that iOS 18 will be the “biggest redesign ever” for the smartphones.

As showcased at Apple’s annual WWDC 2024 conference, the new update includes plenty of high-anticipated features such as custom emojis, an Apple AI, and even new ways to transfer money to friends.

There have also been plenty of quality-of-life improvements to apps like Photos, which will clean up the interface where millions of people browse their galleries of snaps.

Apple users fear iOS 18 update could benefit cheaters

However, one of the new features included in iOS 18 has got some folks spooked, and that is the ability to “hide” certain apps and folders on the home screen.

The “private folder” feature gives iPhone users the ability to lock a collection of desired apps away from prying eyes, and requires a passcode or Face ID to open the application.

Individual apps can also have the ability to be locked, without the need to be hidden on the home screen

“Users can now lock an app, and for additional privacy, they can hide an app, moving it to a locked, hidden apps folder,” Apple states on its website.

“When an app is locked or hidden, content like messages or emails inside the app is hidden from search, notifications, and other places across the system.”

This feature might be practical for a variety of people, like parents who let their iPhones get used by their children and want to lock away games or streaming services. Or for people who need to protect sensitive commercial information on their work phone.

But this hasn’t stopped people online from being worried that the new sneaky feature might get used by unfaithful partners to hide things like dating apps from their significant others.

The social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has been swamped with fears from people who say the update will “end relationships”.

“Cheaters and men on the down low about to have a field day with the hidden apps folder on iOS18,” wrote one X user.

“iOS 18 letting you hide apps, Twitter letting you hide likes. Cheaters are about to go on a generational run,” said another.

In contrast to the concerns from skeptics, others pointed out that one new feature of iOS 18 could actually be used to catch cheaters in the act.

The update to iOS revamps the capabilities of screen sharing between Apple devices using SharePlay, and allows users to take control of another person’s device in real-time.

However, this feature can only be used with permission. And if a partner really is cheating, it’s unlikely they’d allow anyone to just take control of their phone like that.
