The police watchdog is investigating after a moped rider was killed in a crash with a marked Metropolitan Police car.
The 55-year-old died after colliding with the police vehicle in Sutton, south London, on Monday (June 17).
The crash happened around 4.45pm in Wrythe Lane, at its junction with Erskine Road.
London Ambulance Service and an air ambulance were scrambled to the scene but despite efforts to save the moped rider, he died at the scene.
“Work is ongoing to identify and inform his next of kin,” said a Met police spokesperson on Friday.
Two police officers who had been inside the police car were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
“The moped was not being pursued by the police car at the time of the collision,” said the Met spokesperson. “Blue lights and sirens were not in operation.
“Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”
Road closures remained in place on Friday, said police, four days on from crash.
“As is routine in such circumstances, the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed. A referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC),” the spokesperson added.”
Police watchdog the IOPC confirmed it had begun an independent investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
“After being notified by the Met Police, we began our inquiries and attended the police post incident procedure to continue gathering evidence,” said a spokesperson.
“We have conducted house-to-house inquiries, completed a CCTV trawl of the area and viewed the body-worn video footage of all officers involved.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died and all those affected by this tragic incident.”
