'Invisible' dog heartbreakingly spends seven years in kennels without adoption

An 'invisible' dog has spent seven years in kennels after several attempts to find her a home failed.

Having spent almost her entire life in shelter, lonely Lina has become part of the background at Barking Mad Dog Rescue.

The eight-year-old dog has waited an "incredibly long time" in a small shelter for an owner to come forward - and is now at risk of dying in kennels.

When she was just a puppy, Lina was picked up from the streets of Bucharest, Romania, with a broken jaw.

Hilary Anderson of Barking Mad Dog Rescue said: "She was first found on a building site with her jaw smashed in - no doubt this was done deliberately.

"She was put back together again by goodhearted people and a skilled vet."

Lina has been described as a shy dog who would "blossom in a home with an owner willing to work with her one-to-one".

"Lina has never had an opportunity to shine. She just seems to be invisible," she added.

"She is a little shy until she gets to know you. She isn't a fearful dog though but will be shy in a new situation."

The mixed breed would suit a home with another dog - and would need careful reintroduction to cats as in a previous shelter, the cat teased her every day by "dancing on her kennel roof and swiping at her head".

Hilary added: "Lina would need an experienced rescue home as she isn't somewhere where she gets a chance for walks or to broaden her horizons.

"We would love to bring Lina to UK foster carer.

"Her world is a small one and she would need time and another dog to gradually get used to the big world again."

Barking Mad Dog Rescue has been working to rehome Romanian kill shelter dogs to the UK since 2013.

The rescue has rehomed more than 1,000 dogs and continues to feed about 650 dogs every single day across their shelters.

Hilary, from Scotland, launched Barking Mad Dog Rescue after rescuing her dog Pixie following a Facebook appeal.

She said: “Pixie lived in a park in Bucharest, with her mum, brother and six other dogs.

“They were fed, vaccinated and neutered by a woman who wanted to help the park strays.

“The pack survived the best way they could. Winters were harsh. Their guardian built them a kennel and locals smashed it to pieces.”

But their lives changed in 2013 when new laws came in ordering strays to be rounded up and killed.

“Pixie, like many others, found herself in a privately-owned shelter.

"Although safe from the dog catchers, Pixie had lost everything else - her freedom and her life. She stopped eating and couldn’t get used to life behind bars.

”In desperation, the woman who had cared for Pixie in the park posted her on Facebook asking for someone to take her away from Romania and give her the home she deserved.”

Hilary answered this plea and ended up adopting Pixie alongside two other dogs, Elsa and Kirsty, before starting up her own rescue.

The Barking Mad Dog Rescue team now return to Romania every two months to visit their own shelters in Constanta.
