The Invictus Games are set to return later this month, after being postponed first from 2020 to 2021, and then again to 2022 because of the pandemic.

The event, which will be the fifth Games, will see more than 500 competitors from 20 nations compete in a series of adaptive sports.

Prince Harry, who remains a private patron of the Invictus Games, has already announced where the Games will be hosted, and further details are being announced in the run-up to the event. Here is everything you need to know.

What are the Invictus Games?

The Invictus Games are an international Paralympic-style multi-sport event created by Prince Harry in 2014 "to demonstrate the power of sports to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and to demonstrate life beyond disability".

Wounded, injured, or sick armed services personnel take part in various sports, including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and indoor rowing.

What does the word 'Invictus' mean?

Invictus is the Latin for "unconquered, undefeated".

Prince Harry said the Games shine a spotlight on the "unconquerable" character of servicemen and women, their families and their "Invictus" spirit.

William Ernest Henley's 1875 poem 'Invictus' has often been recited during times of adversity, and organisers say it captures the spirit of the event.

An amputee himself, Henley's 16 line poem reflects his long battle with illness.

Why did Prince Harry launch the event?

Prince Harry has been the driving force behind the Invictus Games after seeing a British team compete at the US Warrior Games in Colorado in 2013.

He vowed to "steal" the idea and launch a similar event in the UK after seeing the impact sport can have on the wounded in their recovery.

The first games took place in London in 2014 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the site of the 2012 London Olympics, after just 10 months of planning.

About 300 competitors from 13 countries which fought alongside the UK in recent military campaigns took part in the event, including the US, Australia, Canada, France and Afghanistan.

When do the 2022 Invictus Games start?

The 2022 Invictus Games will run from April 16 to 22 in The Hague, The Netherlands.

The participants will play ten sports: athletics, weightlifting, hand archery, indoor rowing, a Land Rover driving challenge, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, cycling, sitting volleyball and swimming.

There are four locations where the activities are planned in and around the Zuiderpark in The Hague. The Fan zone will be open every day from 9am to 7pm.
