Investigators spotted outside Edinburgh flat days after huge fire closed South Bridge

Investigators have been spotted scouring the scene of a major fire in Edinburgh's city centre days after it took place.

Officers in white suits were seen on South Bridge following a flat fire that ripped through a tenement building on Saturday afternoon, as emergency services rushed to the scene.

The bridge was temporarily closed to traffic and pedestrians until the fire was extinguished. There were no reported injuries as a result of the blaze, but a joint investigation is understood to be underway between Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to determine the cause.

Around 6.30pm, on June 3, six appliances from the fire service were mobilised to the scene and nearly three days later, investigators have only now been able to access the wreckage after a thorough examination to check the safety of the building.

Several fire investigators were seen entering and outside the flat on Tuesday, with police officers also in attendance.

Speaking at the time of the fire, a concerned on-looker said: "The whole of south bridge is closed and there are about eight fire engines plus dozens of police and ambulances."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 6.40pm on Saturday, 3 June, 2023 we were called to a report of a fire at a property on South Bridge, Edinburgh.

"Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished. There were no reports of injuries. Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the fire."
