Investigations continue into cause of Cessnock house fire, killing teen

INVESTIGATIONS continue into the cause of a house fire in Cessnock which killed a teenage boy on Sunday night.

Emergency services were called to a home on Alkira Avenue around 10pm on July 28, to reports of a blaze and an occupant inside.

A 16-year-old boy was pulled from the flames and despite the efforts of NSW Ambulance Paramedics, he died at the scene.

"The cause remains under investigation and inquiries are ongoing at this stage," a NSW Police spokesperson told the Newcastle Herald.

While there were reports of a second child being rescued from the engulfed home, police have confirmed the 16-year-old was the only occupant inside the house.

"The boy was the only one inside the home," a spokesperson said.

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesperson said only one person was brought out of the house by FRNSW crews.

"... that being the person who sadly passed away," they said.

An outpouring of tributes from cards with heart-felt messages and bouquets of flowers have been left in memory of the teen who is being remembered as a 'playful, kind and mischievous' soul.

Eight Fire and Rescue NSW crews, made up of 30 firefighters, were called to the scene alongside the NSW Rural Fire Service, after multiple calls were made to triple-0.

Fire crews including teams from Cessnock, Bellbird, Kearsley, Abermain, Mayfield West and East Maitland managed to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties, but the home was completely destroyed.

FRNSW urges people to have working smoke alarms and to test those alarms regularly.
