Investigation launched by Gardaí after body found in waters by Cork village

Following a multi-agency search operation in Cork a body has been recovered.

Multiple groups came together on Wednesday after Gardaí informed them it was believed a man was missing in the Coachford area, a village in Co Cork.

As well as groups of locals, the West Cork Civil Defence, Irish Search Dogs, Crosshaven Coast Guard, and Mallow Search and Rescue all joined in on the massive search operation, directed by Gardaí located in Mallow.

Throughout the course of the day, divers who were part of the Mallow team used side scan sonar equipment to scan the waters, eventually locating the body of a man in his 40s who is believed to be the missing person.

The man’s body was subsequently taken for a postmortem at Cork University Hospital.

In a statement to CorkBeo, a Garda spokesperson explained that they are currently investigating all the circumstances surrounding the death and that the postmortem results will determine the next steps of their investigation.

It's understood it is being treated as a tragic incident at this time.

The spokesperson told the publication: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances following the discovery of a body of a man in his 40s in the Coachford area yesterday, Wednesday, May 3.

"His body has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place at a later date, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation."

The Mallow Search and Rescue volunteer team sent condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

A spokesperson told CorkBeo: "Today we were contacted by Macroom Gardai to assist in a search for a missing person in the Coachford area, members travelled to the region and unfortunately we have to report that the body of what we believe is that of the missing person was recovered by our divers with the use of our Side Scan Sonar system.

"Condolences to the family and friends RIP.

"We would like to thank the following for their assistance during the search Cork West Civil Defence, Irish Search Dogs, Crosshaven Coast Guard, Garda Síochána, Irish Coast Guard and many locals that helped."
