Investigation launched as woman found dead near train station

An investigation has been launched after a woman was found dead near a train station.

Police were scrambled to the tracks near Ashton-Under-Lyne shortly before 4pm on Easter Sunday, April 9. Rail services were suspended between Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Victoria for more than three hours, with delays until 8pm as emergency services carried out enquiries.

British Transport Police has confirmed that a woman was confirmed as dead at the scene and that her family has been informed.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police (BTP) said: "British Transport Police were called to the railway tracks near Ashton-under-Lyne shortly before 4pm on Sunday 9 April.

"Sadly a woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"The woman’s family has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.

"The incident is currently being investigated."
