Investigation launched after woman dies in flat fire

An investigation has been launched after a pensioner died in a flat fire. The blaze broke out at the home in Warrington on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday afternoon Cheshire Police confirmed a woman in her 70s had sadly died. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are now investigating the cause of the fire.

Firefighters were called to Lyon Street in Latchford at 9.45pm on Tuesday. After extinguishing the fire they remained at the scene overnight, using thermal imaging cameras to check for hotspots.

In a statement Cheshire Police said: "At 10.10pm on Tuesday May 3, police were called to support Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service following a fire at a flat on Lyon Street, Latchford. Sadly, a woman died as a result of the fire.

"Formal identification has not yet taken place, but she is believed to be in her 70s. Her next of kin have been informed. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has launched an investigation into the cause of a fire."

In a statement on Tuesday night Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters from three stations were called to a report of a serious fire in a flat on Lyon Street at around 9.45pm on Tuesday. Wearing breathing apparatus they used a hose reel water jet to extinguish the fire and contain it to the flat in which it started. An investigation into the cause is underway."
