The fire brigade had one fire engine on the scene and left around 9.15pm.
Station manager Ian Stewart of West Denton Community Fire Station stated that the fire is the latest in a spate of incidents of anti-social behaviour.
He said: “We have been working closely with our colleagues at Northumbria Police after a spate of anti-social behaviour in West Denton in recent weeks.
"It has seen a number of deliberate fires set in the area that have required the attendance of our crews, and the police.
"We believe these fires have been started by local youths and we are supporting the police by providing them with CCTV and body cam footage wherever possible.
"We would like to make it clear that this type of behaviour is completely unacceptable, not only does it put communities at risk but it puts those responsible at direct risk of injury."
The spokesperson for the fire service added that a police investigation is under way.
They said: "Our crews will continue to work with police to support their investigation and we would call on parents to speak to their children and emphasise that this behaviour puts lives at risk."
