Investigation into death of teen Elliot Ayre hit by taxi near Bishop Auckland continues

The circumstances surrounding the death of a teenager who was hit by a taxi are still being investigated by police.

Elliot Ayre was walking along the A689 near Toronto, County Durham, at around 2.40am on December 27 when he was struck by a taxi, heading for Bishop Auckland. Paramedics attended, but tragically, the 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following Elliot's death, a police investigation was launched and the force urged any witnesses to come forward. Now, over a fortnight later, Durham Constabulary has confirmed that officers are still investigating.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Ayre’s death on behalf of the coroner."

A day after his death, Elliot's loving family released a statement, saying: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our son, Elliot Ayre. Elliot is a much-loved son, brother, grandson and friend, social butterfly and devoted Sunderland fan who touched so many lives with his carefree spirit.

"We will carry him with us every day. We wish to thank all who have sent their support and ask for privacy as we remember and commemorate his life, together with those who love him.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt Iley of Durham Constabulary’s Roads and Armed Policing Unit on 101, quoting incident number 48 of December 27.
