Inventing Anna’s Anna Delvey released from prison after being detained for a year

Anna Delvey, also known as Anna Sorokin, has been released from prison after being detained for more than a year.

The subject of Netflix's Inventing Anna series was released from jail on 7 October, according to a statement to E! News from Anna's attorney John Sandweg.

Anna's spokesperson told NBC News that she will remain under house arrest with electronic monitoring at an apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York.

She was detained on March 2021 for overstaying her visa.

A judge granted permission for her release on 6 October but she stayed in custody for an extra day while she sorted out accommodation for herself.

E! News reported that a spokesperson for Anna said: "She has to secure an apartment as she has to provide an address for where she is staying. She had a few options but they didn't work out when they found out she's a felon."

Anna is wanting to stay in New York, more specifically looking to find somewhere to live in Manhattan.

Before going to prison for overstaying her visa, Anna was arrested back in 2017 and was charged with defrauding or intentionally deceiving major financial institutions, banks, hotels and acquaintances for a total amount upwards of $275,000.

The next year, she and her lawyer attempted to make a plea deal, but a judge denied their request, saying that a lack of 'remorse' was shown by Anna.

Anna was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison two years after her first arrest.

She was convicted of attempted grand larceny, larceny in the second degree and theft of services.

Despite being a free woman now, Anna still faces possible deportation to Germany according to her lawyer.

Sandweg said: "After 17 months of immigration detention, an immigration judge recognized that immigration detention was no longer necessary for Anna and ordered her release subject to various conditions of supervision. This ruling does not mean that Anna will get a free pass."

Anna was portrayed by Julia Garner in Inventing Anna, which led to the actress an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie.

The Netflix description of the series reads: "Audacious entrepreneur or con artist? A journalist chases down the story of Anna Delvey, who convinced New York's elite she was a German heiress."

In February Netflix reported that Inventing Anna was the most watched English-language series in a single week, ever.

In just one week, from February 14 to the 20th, it got 196 million hours of viewing time, which was on top of 77 million it already had from February 11 to the 14th right when it was first released.
