Internet Goes Wild as Trump Announces Tariff on 'Things Associated With Chips': 'Potato or Chocolate?'

President Donald Trump announced plans for tariffs Friday, including "things associated with chips."

While he appeared to be making a vague reference to semiconductor chips—the small device crucial to the function of most of our electronic devices—the internet readily misinterpreted Trump's meaning in favor of comic relief.

"There is a 50% chance he means potato chips and a 50% chance he means microchips," one user quipped.

"Potato chips, poker chips, or microchips?" someone asked. "Potato or chocolate?" another user demanded.

Some expressed concern over the possibility of pricier snacks. "He's gonna tariff chips and all the dips???" one person lamented, while another exclaimed, "It's bad enough that I'll be paying more for guacamole, but now chips! What's next? Salsa? Queso?"

"You can't raise the price of chips one week before the Super Bowl," a user added.

Beyond "chips" and "things associated with chips," Trump named pharmaceuticals and steel as categories he planned to impose new tariffs on. Amid the jokes, others shared their anxieties over how the tariffs may impact prices for American consumers.

At the end of Trump's second week back in office, his administration's dizzying array of bold initiatives have left many critics with a chip on their shoulder.
