North Ayrshire Women‘s Aid will mark International Women’s Day 2023 tomorrow with a walk around Saltcoats and Ardrossan to highlight how women are oppressed around the world.
The non-profit organisation will have an International feast of food afterwards at the hub on the corner, celebrating women from around the world and enjoying a selection of multicultural food.
Service manager, Lorraine Kerr, said: “We will have banners and flags for countries across the world tomorrow, each banner will have a fact or statistic for the country on how women are oppressed and disadvantaged in that specific country.
“We think it is important to be loud and visible on International Women’s Day to raise awareness of the struggle women and girls have all over the world. Days like this and the 16 days of action are good opportunities to head out to the community and get people talking about issues like Domestic Abuse.
“At North Ayrshire Women’s Aid, we have seen our referrals increase year upon year and everyone can play an important role in ending violence against women and girls. We want to get out and reach the community, if our message reaches one woman in need then it will be worth it.”
“International Women’s Day is also an opportunity to celebrate women and their achievements, despite the oppression women achieve amazing things. Especially the women who come to our service and build themselves back up again.”
North Ayrshire Women‘s Aid created the hub on the corner as a resource for all women in the community, the organisation also provides shared accommodations and now has 24 individual spaces for women and children ranging from studio apartments to three-bedroom family homes.
The hub hosts workshops from various agencies including debt advice and women’s health events. Within the hub, there is a sensory room, IT area, Kindness Boutique where women can take what they need, kids’ corner, group room and kitchen with all the facilities.
On March 8, North Ayrshire Women‘s Aid wants once again to show support for women and highlight the oppression of women all over the world. The event will begin at 11 am at 17 Vernon Street, Saltcoats, everyone is welcome to attend.
