International Rules series return unlikely says GAA president Larry McCarthy

GAA President Larry McCarthy has ruled out a return of the International Rules Series as it will ask players to choose between their local club and representing their country.

The series has not taken place since 2017 and McCarthy insists there is no indication that it will be back anytime soon.

When asked about a return, he said: "It’s off the table for the foreseeable future because what you'd be doing is asking a player to decide between his country and his club.

"Players who are going to be on the international rules team are more than likely going to be on successful club teams, and that’s unfair.

"It’s not completely gone but let’s see how the split seasons settle in, and then maybe we can revisit it. But I mean at the moment, it is off the table.

“They (Australia) haven’t been requesting and I visited with them when I was at the Australasian games when I was in Melbourne in October and I said fine.

"They were understanding of it, so we agreed that it’s not going to happen in the short-term, but it’s not obviously dead either."

Meanwhile, Croke Park chiefs have said they are willing to talk to Katie Taylor's camp about a possible fight taking place at GAA HQ in 2023.

The Bray boxer had her long-awaited homecoming at the 3Arena last weekend in front of a sold-out 9,000-seater crowd.

McCarthy has said that the association would be willing to sit down for talks about a potential fight night on Jones' Road.

"We haven’t had any application for them to come back. We’d certainly talk to them, I don’t how realistic selling out Croke Park in the context of selling out the 3Arena," he added.

Taylor's camp had previously negotiated with the GAA in attempts to book the venue for her rematch against Amanda Serrano but talks ultimately broke down with Matchroom Boxing citing high security costs.
