Interior Design Masters: Alan Carr likens Portishead school room to 'Mr Tumble hangout'

The four common rooms of a North Somerset school are set to be given a complete revamp on BBC One under the watchful eye of presenter Alan Carr. Gordano School, an academy for 11-18 year olds in Portishead, will be featured on the latest episode of Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr tonight (Monday, March 23).

Interior Design Masters sees 10 talented interior designers, now whittled down to eight, show off their amazing skills in a bid to win a life-changing contract. Comedian Alan Carr and interiors guru Michelle Ogundehin are on the hunt for talent, passion and dazzling designs.

Tonight, the eight remaining contenders will be getting to work on the school common rooms, with two set to be eliminated after the challenge. During the episode, Alan can be seen weaving his way through the school building in the trailer, as he makes a garish comparison between one designer's handiwork and a children's television character.

Popping into the Fitzroy Foxes' common room first, Alan catches up with contestant Molly Coath, who is rolling orange paint onto the ceiling when Alan walks in. Molly says: "We're going bold.

"We've got a green little section over there, nice kind of meeting room, then a bright blue in the corner over there. A lot of the walls we're just going to keep white."

When Alan questioned Molly on the rainbow of bright hues she was decorating the room with, she said: "I'm here for it, they're kids. It's fun, it's vibrant, I'm happy with the colours."

Alan then left Molly to get on with decorating and headed to see Banjo, who was creating a screen out of long cardboard tubes, which he was not going to be painting. To camera, Alan said: "Holly and Banjo have gone for these really bold primary colours, which is all well and good, but does it look more like a place Mr Tumble would hangout than a load of teenagers?"

With plenty of interior design fanatics looking forward to tonight's episode, Laura Rich, a product developer at South West furniture company Furniturebox, has shared some insight into the latest teaser. Laura said: "In the teaser clip, we see a reminiscent Alan Carr taken aback by Molly’s striking reimagination of the Fitzroy Foxes common room.

"'We’re going bold!' Molly declares as Alan steps into a deep pool of orange that makes him fancy a packet of Wotsits – the perfect break time snack! Molly is practising an interior design method known as colour blocking.

"They are creating wrap-around zones marked out in bold colours and separated by sheets of white. Each zone represents something different, so students feel as though they are in their own little area.

“We often see colour blocking used in open plan living, contrasting colours on cabinets and walls to distinguish between kitchen spaces, living rooms, and dining areas. To that end, Molly using this technique to freshen up a large common room makes a lot of sense.

“The technique used is one thing, the colours used are another. Clearly, much thought has gone into Molly’s bold use of orange, green, and blue. In colour psychology, blue represents stability and productivity; green evokes safety and the natural world; and orange channels energy, attention, enthusiasm, and happiness.”

The latest episode of Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr will air tonight, March 23, at 9pm on BBC One.
