Interior design expert's strict limit on number of colours to use in home

If you've just moved into a new home and are keen to put your stamp on the place, the colour schemes will be top of your mind.

However, before you get too carried away looking at samples and picking out matching bedding, an expert has warned there's a maximum number of colours you should use throughout a house.

Tash Bradley, a colour psychologist and director of interior design at Lick, has been sharing her top decorating tips with The Mirror.

The painting pro explains that if you are looking to create a home that is "harmonised" and "not too busy" then you should follow two strict colour rules - one for how many colours you use in a room, and one for the rest of the place.

Tash explained: "I always tell my clients to try to stick to three colours per room.

"Now you can go up and down with the weight of that colour, so let's say you had a teal, a green, and a pink all in one room, that means you stick to those three colours, but you could also have a dark green, a light green, a rich, earthy pink and a light pink.

"You can go up and down the shades, but stick to three colours per room."

The interior design guru went on to urge people to use no more than eight colours in their homes in total.

She continued: "When you're decorating a whole house, try to stick to eight colours on your walls and everything, no more than eight.

"This just means that everything feels a bit more cohesive and harmonised and first together and isn't too busy.

This comes after Tash shared her advice on how to pick the right colour for your space - and she had five trusty steps to ensure you made the best decision for you and your family.

The first step is all to do with thinking about who you are decorating the space for, who lives in the house and what are their styles like as you want to create a home that's "comfortable" for everyone.

Next, you have to consider the 'fixed elements' in the room and the colours they are - such as your flooring, the sofa, kitchen countertops, etc.

Thirdly, work out what you do and don't like about the room and how you can use colour to highlight the things you love or distract the eyes away from the things you don't like.

The painting pro's two final tips are all to do with figuring out your own personal style, as this will also have an impact on your colour choices and work out the mood you want to create in the space - do you want it to feel relaxing and cosy or bright and playful.
