The top federal prosecutor in Washington, recently appointed by President Donald Trump, has expressed frustration over recent leaks to the press. Internal emails obtained reveal that Ed Martin, the interim US attorney for DC, directed his staff to scrutinize a former official's work on January 6 cases after she criticized him on TV.
In an email sent to his entire office, Martin complained about a leaked email where he initiated an internal review of how prosecutors handled certain January 6 cases. The Supreme Court had previously determined that prosecutors had overstepped with charging decisions in these cases.
Martin, known for his socially conservative activism, expressed disappointment over the leaked email and criticized the leak as insulting and unprofessional. He also targeted a former prosecutor, Ashley Akers, who resigned after Trump granted mass clemency, ending nearly 1,600 cases and wiping away remaining prison terms.
Akers, in multiple TV interviews, condemned Martin's actions, particularly his support for lifting travel restrictions on groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. She described Trump's decision to absolve January 6 defendants as appalling and criticized Martin's internal review as a 'wild goose chase'.
