Interim Queen of the South boss Wullie Gibson said his side gave everything they had in their 0-0 draw with table toppers Arbroath.
The club captain, who played at left back on Saturday, admitted the squad was gutted not to win but can see the positives in the point.
Wullie said: “We were disappointed in the changing room at the end.
“I said to the lads before the game that all we could ask from them was to go out and have a go and give us 100 per cent attitude and commitment.
“The boys showed that and bought in to what we wanted to do.
“I know it’s not going to change over night and I know it’s only a point but it’s a start and we’re unlucky at the end not to take three.”
There was plenty of support from the stands with the team given a standing ovation at half time and full time.
Gibson added: “You can see the backing we had and hopefully the support can get behind us until the end of the season.
“The support I had in the week building up to the game, the messages and fans reaching
out, has been tremendous. At the end I had a wee frog in the throat because it’s my local club and it means so much.”
However, Queens suffered a big loss in the first half when Lee Connelly went off injured. An update on his condition will come later in the week. That provided a chance for Kieran McKechnie to make his first appearance since last season after he was injured.
Gibson said: “Lee wasn’t 100 per cent with a foot injury coming into the game but we felt because he’s a big player for us we’d give him every opportunity. It was actually a knee injury he picked up it wasn’t his foot he’s gone off with.
“But I was delighted with Kieran McKechnie coming on because it’s been a long road to recovery from injury for him and the confidence he’ll take from that is huge.”
Gibson had former Hibs assistant Grant Murray and Davie Mathieson in the dugout to assist him on Saturday.
They watched on as Arbroath made a goal line clearance in the dying moments of the match to take a point.
Gibson said: “I just said to Grant and Davie when you’re top of the league that happens.
“It’s the bit of luck that you get. If you’re bottom of the table and if that’s at our end that probably goes in the back of the net. But it’s defender’s instinct.
“I bang in to our boys that we need to be harder to beat, keep clean sheets. I’m delighted to get the clean sheet.
“First and foremost I’m pleased with what I’ve seen from the boys today and we take it into Saturday.”
