'Intergalactic' rollerskating rink with sprung dancefloor set to open in the city centre

Manchester’s new futuristic rollerskating rink Paradise Skate World is throwing open its doors on June 2, it’s been confirmed. And those keen to don their rollerboots and get out there can buy tickets from next week.

The new attraction has been created by the people behind Junkyard Golf, and will be found in the same spot as the original Junkyard Golf site, in the Great Northern Warehouse. The theme is ‘intergalactic rollerskating’, with the design featuring far-out installations and celestial creations’.

The 6000 sq ft venue will also feature a central roll-up bar area in the middle of the sprung dancefloor, with room for 50 to 60 skaters at one time. Meanwhile, the food available will be snacks like nori popcorn and wasabi prawn tacos, fusing Mexican and Japanese flavours.

Co-founder Sophie-Larissa Houghton said: “Paradise Skate World is one step closer to opening its doors and we couldn’t be more excited for everyone to experience our cosmic paradise.”

You can register for ‘early bird’ entry now at the Paradise Skateworld website, with the tickets being released on April 6. Prices will start at £12.50 per skater for an hour.

Junkyard fellow co-founder Chris Legh told the M.E.N last month: “As competitive socialising has grown, everybody’s reassessing different things. So like everyone at one point got a pair of rollerskates for a birthday or Christmas as a kid, whether they used them for one day or one year.

“It’s not unfamiliar, especially when you look at the success of ice rinks popping up at Christmas time, we just felt there was something in it. “We trying to tap into this idea of a ‘cosmic wonderland’, so there will be sculptures, artworks.

“And we’re working with three or four local artists to try and turn the space into a cosmic, dreamlike place. But it won’t just be a place for good skaters, it will be for all abilities, and we’ll have some skate marshalls to assist people too.”

They’re also offering a prize for sign ups of two lights to Miami, four nights in an Art Deco hotel plus roller skating lessons on South Beach.
