'Interesting footwear' - singer Skin sparks reaction collecting OBE but she's not only target

Receiving an honour from the King isn't something that happens every day so if it is ever your turn then it's worth making an effort on your outfit. Singer skin, lead vocalist of the Brit-rock band Skunk Anansie, accepted her OBE in stunning fashion at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

The 55-year-old singer, whose real name is Deborah Dyer, was made an OBE for services to music, and said the honour was “completely unexpected”. She said: “It had literally never occurred to me that this could happen, it was a really lovely surprise.”

But it was her outfit rather than her music which became a talking point on social media. For after Graham Bartholomew posted a tweet from the occasion with the words "What a picture" it sparked hundreds of comments along with more than 5,000 likes.

And some had plenty to say on the outfits of the day. Mike Abel was quick to put his view forward saying: "She looks positively dressed-down in comparison to the King. Gold ropes, red trouser stripes and some interesting silver things (for horse riding perhaps) on the back of his shoes?"

While Rob B added: "What on earth is that ridiculous outfit? - said Skin”. And Don Clarke added: "The Kings outfit is ridiculous. He should show some respect. Skin is music royalty!"

Thomas von Plehwe had a more general comment on both Skin and the King. He tweeted: "Interesting footwear: one wearing impractical platforms, the other slightly ridiculous spurs.."

And others had a more practical view. Silverman posted: "I wonder about the state of the stair carpets! Why on earth is he wearing spurs indoors?" However football digs were also the order of the day when TC replied: "The closest that spurs have been to an award in decades."

Others did want to praise the singer for her musical talents however. Josh Bosh tweeted: "Well deserved, she has a wonderful voice….dodgy dress sense though!"

Skin, best known for her band’s hit single Weak, said the honour was on a par with singing for the Dalai Lama and duetting with Pavarotti as the best moments of her career. “Just being in this castle is an honour, it has so much history and so much tradition.

"It’s quite nice to have been born in this country and to be in this position,” she said. The rock singer said it might be a stretch to expect the King to be a fan of her music, but recounted their “very sweet” conversation.

“We had a long old conversation. He said, ‘So how did I manage to miss this wonderful band of yours? They keep telling me that this wonderful band of yours is excellent’ – he was very sweet.”
