An interabled influencer couple has gotten married after four years together.
On Sunday, Shane Burcaw and Hannah Aylward, who regularly document their relationship on Instagram and on their YouTube channel Squirmy and Grubs, where they have more than 694,000 followers, shared pictures and videos from their backyard wedding in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“On Friday, September 4th, I married the love of my life. It wasn’t the big gathering we had always planned on having, but it was perfect,” Aylward captioned a photo of herself and her new husband from their wedding day. “Shane and I can’t wait to celebrate with our families in person when it’s safe, but for now, we’re husband and wife!!!! And that’s the most important part.
“I’m incredibly lucky to now be married to the greatest guy I know.”
Burcaw, who was born with neuromuscular disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and has used a wheelchair since he was two years old, also shared a photo from the celebration in which Aylward can be seen showing off her wedding ring.
“What made me smile this week? I married my best friend. On Friday, September 4th, Hannah and I tied the knot and became husband and wife!” he wrote. “It was a private backyard ceremony that we conducted over Zoom with our officiant. Certainly not the wedding we originally imagined, but it was a beautiful moment filled with the most important thing: our love for each other.”
“I’m beyond happy and smiling a whole lot,” Burcaw added.
On YouTube, where the couple’s wedding video titled: “WE GOT MARRIED” has been viewed more than 995,000 times, they took viewers along as they picked up their custom wedding bands and counted down the hours until they could use the terms “husband and wife,” before showing their first kiss as a married couple.
On social media, the couple’s wedding was met with an outpouring of support and congratulatory messages.
“Congrats you two. You two are beaming with happiness,” one person commented. Another wrote: “This is the kind of news the world needs right now.”
Since they met, the couple has been working to break down stigmas attached to disability.
“Our goal is to normalise disability and relationships like ours,” Burcaw explained in a YouTube video shared in 2018.
