Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi makes major Liverpool admission in Champions League

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has declared Liverpool favourites in their Champions League clash - but believes he has a gameplan to challenge the Reds.

The Serie A champions welcome Jurgen Klopp's side at the San Siro on Wednesday for the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

While both teams stand second in their respective leagues, Inter are through to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time in 10 years compared to Liverpool reaching the stage for the fifth succession season.

And while mindful of the difference in experience, Inzaghi reckons small details could be key.

"I think that Liverpool are one of the greatest clubs in Europe," said the Inter boss.

"But I'm happy that my club and the fans and my players deserve to play these kind of games against these very experienced teams.

"We haven't been playing in the last 16 for a long time. The first step was to get to that stage after 10 years. It will be hard but we will try to do our best.

"I believe Liverpool are the favourites but the matches have to be played. Liverpool have strong individual players but all games start 0-0.

"In some matches, you can't ignore the smallest detail as they are important. We know what I'm going to ask the team and my lads, we will need to impose our style. I want my players to play with a free mind and play our game.

"We know determination will make a difference in this kind of match and my lads have proved it since the start of the season. They are determined to win."

Inzaghi added: "Liverpool are a team with great players in every position, a great manager and a great squad, a very intense style of play.

"We need to be good both on and off the ball. If we miss a pass, they can counter-attack at any moment. They have Van Dijk and Alisson who are great at long balls, the two full-backs have great feet and they can be dangerous in any part of the pitch."

While Liverpool won all six group games - including home and away victories against AC Milan - Inter were beaten twice by Real Madrid in finishing runners-up behind the Spaniards.

But Inzaghi believes his team gave a good account of themselves against the La Liga side.

"We played very well against Real Madrid both home and away and we proved what we can do, and we created a lot of chances but didn't score as much," he said.

"Against Liverpool it will be same. We always create chances but we need to score them."

Inter go into the game having lost to Serie A leaders and neighbours AC Milan and then drawn at another title rival, Napoli, at the weekend.

And despite the lack of wins, Inzaghi said: "I'm actually satisfied with the performances. For 70 minutes we played a great derby, even better than we played in Napoli.

"We played a great second half in Napoli in which we did very well. I'm not satisfied at all with one point out of six, but as far as we played we played two great matches against two great teams."
