Instant analysis as Jets offense rolls craps in Las Vegas, fall to 4-5

The New York Jets found sevens in Las Vegas. It’s too bad they were playing craps and not slots. The offense falls flat yet again, failing to score a touchdown as penalties either wiped out a touchdown or kept the Jets from scoring one. The cherry on top was Zach Wilson’s interception. The Jets lost to the Raiders 16-12 and now sit at 4-5, falling even further down the standings in the AFC, now sitting behind the Raiders and Colts.

Here’s some instant notes and thoughts from the Week 10 loss.

Final score: Raiders 16, Jets 12

Game notes

  • There must be some kind of voodoo preventing the Jets from seeing the end zone. Whether it was penalties or just poor play calling, the Jets can’t find the end zone again. Their last touchdown was Week 8 against the Giants.
  • The clock has to be ticking now for offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Something has to change on offense because the defense has to be getting tired of working their tails off only to see the offense fail to pull their weight. The season is being wasted. Robert Saleh needs to do something and fast.
  • Zach Wilson picked the worst possible time to throw his first interception since Week 5. He started down Allen Lazard, allowing Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane to break on the route and pick off Wilson.
  • At least the Jets were finally able to score on their opening drive. It was a field goal, of course, but better than the first eight games of the season.
  • The Jets were a little better on third down, going 7 of 16. The defense held the Raiders to 5 of 15 on third down.
  • Why the Jets continue to take Breece Hall off the field on some key third downs remains a mystery. One key spot was the tipped pass that was intended for Michael Carter that fell incomplete. That said, this was arguably the best Dalvin Cook has looked all season.
  • Greg the Leg came through yet again for the Jets, but the Jets need to start getting seven instead of three. The Jets could have blown the doors of the Raiders in this one. It could have easily been 21-6 at the half. Instead, it was only 9-6.
  • The Jets now sit 13th in the playoff standings, falling behind the Raiders and Colts, who both improved to 5-5 Sunday. The Jets almost have to win these next two game against the Bills and Dolphins and at least get to 6-5. Lose both and Aaron Rodgers probably thinks twice about coming back this season.

It was over when...

…or at least felt over when Zach Wilson stared down Allen Lazard late in the fourth quarter only to have Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane step in front of the throw. The Jets did get one more chance but their Hail Mary attempt was knocked down and fell short, putting the Jets back under .500.

3 stars of the game

3rd star: LB C.J. Mosley – Once again, Mosley leads the charge with 14 tackles

2nd star: S Jordan Whitehead – Whitehead picked up his fourth interception of the season, all coming in primetime after his hat trick in Week 1 against the Bills

1st star: K Greg Zuerlein – Another busy day for Greg the Leg since the Jets can’t find the end zone. Zuerlein nailed all four of his field goals.

Play of the game

Jordan Whitehead scored his fourth interception of the season early in the first quarter. The Jets couldn’t fully take advantage. The night wasn’t full of highlights yet again, but this was at least one positive.

What's next?

The Jets head to Buffalo next week for their second meeting of the season with the Bills. The Jets won on a walk-off overtime punt return touchdown in Week 1. This is about as close to a must-win as you can get in Week 11.
