Inspiring family owned pop up shop opens in The Square, Tallaght

A family owned business is celebrating the launch of its first pop up ahead of the Christmas period.

Thomas Trendy Socks, which offers customers unique and quirky socks, was set up by the family of Thomas Barry, a sock enthusiast who has Down Syndrome. The business was conceptualised by Thomas’ father Finbar, who wanted his son to have the same opportunities for employment as everyone else.

Finbar is hoping to open branches in other shopping centres if the temporary set up in Tallaght proves a success. The new store is located on the Square’s third floor, opposite Dunnes Stores, and is the company’s first indoor location, having previously operated through stalls in outdoor markets.

He told Dublin Live: “We moved to Tallaght 25 years ago and there’s been really good support from the local community. We have a lot of customers on our books from Tallaght, they know the reason why our business was set up. It’s great to have the backing of our fantastic neighbours and people in the area.”

He explained that Thomas always desperately wanted to work but was prevented from entering employment due to several health conditions. Thomas had severe problems with his hips that made mobility a huge challenge - he later became the youngest person in Ireland at the time to undergo a hip replacement.

Thomas is now able to fulfil his dream of working, as he assists the company with promotions and other tasks. The business also is supported by Thomas’ nephew Shane, a graphic designer who carries out most of the IT work for the business. Finbar's grandson’s hard work is a huge part of the company’s success.

He added: “The family is hugely involved. It really suits Thomas and I’m so content that he has something he can call a job. The business also would not be there without Shane- I’m so grateful that he has put so much time and effort into making the business the success that it is.”

The sock designs available in store are quirky and unique. Finbar believes people can easily associate the different designs with their family members or friends, which forms a large part of the appeal behind Thomas Trendy Socks.

The shop also has Christmas socks available for customers to choose from. You can view the various designs here.
