Insider's Deals and Dealmakers Business Breakfast returns

The Insider Deals and Dealmakers Business Breakfast will return in the new year, in partnership with law firm CMS.

Taking place on Tuesday 24 January at the Ardroe House Hotel in Aberdeen, our keynote speaker will be Willie Watt, chair of the Scottish National Investment Bank.

Norman Wisely, managing partner of CMS Aberdeen and co-head of the firm's oil and gas team, will join him on the panel, with more expert guests to be announced in due course.

Frank Fowlie, head of the CMS Scotland corporate team and a partner in the Aberdeen office's climate change sector group, commented that he was keen to hear about what's potentially in store for Scotland's economy during 2023.

"We wanted to partner with Insider again to take the temperature of not just the deal-making community, but all the sectors that are key to this region at a pivotal point in the country’s economic cycle.

"So many different parts of the economy are volatile at the moment, as a result of the energy spike and inflation challenges, as well as the uncertainty generated by the mini-budget - the continuing Russian occupation of Ukraine has not dampened those issues and we have seen consumers and businesses bearing the brunt.

"This event will ask the experts how this volatility will create opportunities for the key sectors in the north east and hopefully some horizon scanning for potential future challenges too - so do join us in January for a delicious and stimulating breakfast."

Across Scotland, sectors are being consolidated as stronger players take advantage of acquisition opportunities, while particularly in the north east many companies are riding the wave of growth created by the nation's net zero emission push and transition from fossil fuel dependency to renewable energy production.

This breakfast discussion will delve deeper into the underlying trends, pulling out key insights on how deals are being done, as well as looking ahead to what may be on the horizon in 2023.

Topics set to be tackled include:

  • Assessing market opportunities for organic and acquisitive growth - how and when to agree a merger or buy a business.
  • How to balance the seemingly opposed demands of ESG targets and dealing with rising energy and supply chain costs.
  • Coping with staffing shortages, from a lack of entry-level graduates to difficulties finding boardroom leaders.
  • What the future holds - how political instability, economic volatility and the continuing pandemic are likely to continue to impact Scottish businesses.
