Inside the Irish pub in Ukraine famous for a very unusual mural of Bono, Sinead O'Connor and George Best

Some Irish people were surprised to learn on St Patrick's Day of a bar in Ukraine with an eye-catching mural of several of our nation's famous faces.

O'Brien's Irish Pub in Kyiv is a hit with tourists looking for a taste of Ireland while visiting Ukraine's capital city.

However, punters get an even bigger dose of the Emerald Isle when they set their sights on one unusual painting in the bar.

The focal point of the pub is a large wall mural showing some of Ireland's best-known stars enjoying a pint together.

At the centre is U2 frontman Bono, with Sinead O'Connor and George Best also featured.

The hidden gem was highlighted by one journalist on Twitter on St Patrick's Day as war rages on in Ukraine.

Oz Katerji, a British-Lebanese freelance conflict journalist and filmmaker, has been reporting on the conflict, with the Russian invasion now in its fourth week.

He posted on Twitter on Thursday about a much-derided poem written by Bono for Ukraine, which was read aloud in the White House by Nancy Pelosi.

"I think society has finally moved beyond the need for Bono’s poetry," he said.

But in a thread, he said U2's songs "still slap" and then proceeded to mention O'Brien's and its Bono painting.

"FYI there’s an Irish bar here in Kyiv with a mural on the wall of Bono having a pint with George Best and Sinead O’Connor," he said.

Irish economist David McWilliams questioned whether it was O'Brien's and said he had visited "many moons ago" in 1998.

McWilliams added: "The barman back then was a lad from Roscommon who was on the run from Serbia....don't even ask!!!"

Irish people have been responding to the post, with one person saying: "Don’t you mean St George Best and Her Royal Highness Sinead O’Connor."

A second wrote: "This is our version of that Nighthawks painting with Marilyn, Elvis and Bogart."

A third commented: "Maybe time to change him for Dolores O'Riordan."

While a fourth added: "This is hilarious. The idea that Bono and Sinead would share a pint. Fair enough on George, he’d share a pint with anyone."

O'Brien's, located on Mykhailivs'ka Street in Ukraine, is described as "a casual, sports-centric Irish tavern with weekend live music".
