Inside the grand manor house for sale that was once used as the backdrop for a Doctor Who Christmas day special

At first glance, this imposing manor house that dates back to the 1850s could be mistaken for the set of a period drama.

But the Victorian property that featured in the 2014 Doctor Who Christmas special is actually on the outskirts of Cardiff.

And now, it's one of the most prestigious - and expensive - homes on the market in south Wales with a price tag of £1.65m.

Vaendre Hall in St Mellons was built in 1850 and is the former home of John Cory, a super-wealthy coal merchant and ship-owner.

The Grade-II listed house boasts five grandeur reception rooms, seven bedrooms and a billiards room and also comes with a coach house, gatekeepers house and stables.

Set on a sprawling four-acre plot of manicured lawns and gardens, Vaendre Hall is nothing short of spectacular.

The current owners have retained ample charm and architectural features such as a Welsh slate roof and original interior doors, which are often hard to come by.

The Cory family made their fortune during the 19th century when they were one of the multimillionaire families dominating the international coal trade.

They made Vaendre Hall their home until moving to Dyffryn House in St Nicholas near Cowbridge.

Inspired by classic Italian houses, you can expect to find mullioned leaded windows, decorative corniced ceilings, woodblock floors and ornate fireplaces.

There's plenty of room to host lavish parties with five reception rooms - including a 36-foot great hall with a grand marble fireplace.

And if that wasn't enough room to play with, golfers are in luck because the house is surrounded by three sides of St Mellons Golf Course.

It's semi-rural location is also perfect for commuters. The property only 15 minutes away from Cardiff city centre and 15 minutes from Newport in the opposite direction and is easily accessible by road and rail links.

Vaendre Hall is currently on the market for £1.65m.

That's not an average price for a property in St Mellons, but this is certainly not your average home.

And according to property portal Zoopla, Vaendre Hall was listed for £2m back in 2018.

Vaendre Hall is for sale with estate agent Herbert R Thomas. For more information, call 01446 772911.
