Inside Sam Fender's 'iconic' local pub which turns his awards into beer pumps

North Shields legend Sam Fender may be making waves around the world - but he's never forgotten where he's come from.

And when he's not travelling the world to perform to crowds of fans, he and his band enjoy popping in for a pint in their favourite pub the Low Lights Tavern.

The iconic pub, which is the oldest in North Shields, was already given Sam's Critic Choice Award when he won back in 2019 which they made into a beer pump.

Seventeen Going Under star Sam, who is up for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Rock/Alternative this year at the Brits, has now promised to give the pub another award if he wins.

The winner of latter is chosen by the public and, just as the vote opened on TiTok, Sam took to Instagram to urge fans to get behind him.

It was in the same video that he promised to put the Brit on display at his beloved Low Lights Tavern should he win.

Cameron Boyd, who owns the Low Lights with Danny Higney, said the pub and the whole community wants him to do well.

He said: "We already have his Critics Choice but he said on his social media if he wins, he'll put his Brit Award behind the bar!

"When he's at home and he's not going away he and his band come in quite often. His friends all drink here and people who know him.

"Everybody loves to see him doing well, all the local people are behind him, he's got the whole of North Shields behind him.

"He's proud of where he comes from, he's not a Newcastle lad, he's a North Shields lad and he's so supportive of the little town he's come from. It's really important to him."

Sam recorded a special performance for America's The Tonight Show last year at the pub which meant the Low Lights Tavern was seen by millions of people across America.

Cameron added: "It was a really great day and it was shown all over America which was just incredible."

Describing Sam as a "down-to-earth lad", Cameron said Sam loves where he's from and does what he can for the local area.

He said: "The pub is pretty well-known, it's the oldest pub in North Shields so it's pretty iconic. It's got a special place in lots of people's hearts. Sam always talks about his hometown and often talks about the pub which is just great.

"Sam is a really down-to-earth lad and he's got time for everybody. People come up to him wanting pictures and autographs and he always has time for people.

"He can't walk down the street without people saying: 'It's Sam Fender'. He's a lovely lad.

"He loves where he's from and wants to do things to help the local area and people. He supports North East Homeless and he does what he can to help the area."

In a video, Sam told fans: "I've been nominated for a Brit Award, well for three; but there's one that's fan-voted and it's voted for on TikTok.

"So, if you can, you can vote for us 10 times a day if you're that much of a legend.

"So I can have another Brit Award and put it on the pub and turn it into a bar pump again."
