Inside RTE Ryan Tubridy's private life - marriage heartbreak, love of books and revolutionary links

As one of the top presenters on the books at RTÉ, Ryan Tubridy is a household name, face and voice for millions of people across the country.

Whether it's presenting his morning radio show on RTÉ Radio One or hosting Ireland's biggest entertainment programme in The Late Late Show, it's rare that you will find 'Tubs' not working hard.

However, he recently revealed how he winds down when not on the clock -and it's all to do with his daughter

“They are young women now so we can have a few drinks together, we can have nights out, nights in.” he told the RTÉ Guide .

“They’re at that lovely age when they are showing me up for the fool that I can be, and calling me out on the mistakes that I make."

Despite being a big name, not a massive amount is known about Ryan's family life, though there have been a few nuggets of information dropped over the years.

Marriage heartbreak

Ryan met his ex-wife Anne Marie Power in RTE 2Fm in 1997, when she was going into a recording studio that he was leaving.

He pursued her for years, and the pair had a daughter, Ella before marrying in 2003.

The couple had another daughter, Julia, before separating in 2006.

In 2019, Ryan told The Irish Sun that his two daughters were his 'most important advisors'.

He explained that he did not always make the best decisions when they were younger, stating that he spent too much time listening to opinions that weren't important to him.

Ryan has often talked about his love of books and reading.

He recently spent time in Iceland visiting one of his favourite authors and regularly posts pictures of his 'to be read' or 'reading' piles to his nearly 200,000 Instagram followers.

More often than not, he'll even look for a few recommendations.

On top of that, he does a massive amount for charity.

He's a UNICEF Ambassador and is famously the host of one of the biggest nights of the year for charities across the country - the Late Late Toy Show.

Throughout the years, he has also been associated with the Saint Vincent De Paul toy appeal, helping to get children in need toys for Christmas time.

As well as that, he often donates his Christmas jumpers from The Late Late Toy show to be auctioned for charity- raising funds for magnificent causes.

He is also an active walker - joining Charlie Bird in scaling Croagh Patrick earlier this year.

Irish revolutionary links

His grandfather on his mother’s side, Christopher Stephen “Todd” Andrews, was taught by Patrick Pearse at St Enda’s School in Rathfarnham.

Having spent 10 days in prison on hunger strike in 1920 for taking part in the War of Independence and, Todd Andrews would fight for the Anti-Treaty side in the Irish Civil War which followed it.

Andrews was appointed the IRA's General Headquarters and travelled the country supervising the training of IRA volunteers

In his later life, he would become chairman of CIE and then the RTÉ Authority at the request of Sean Lemass.

Interestingly, Ryan's cousins include a Fianna Fáil MEP in Barry Andrews and a Sinn Féin TD in Chris Andrews.
