Inside notorious Mykonos bar where tourists are charged colossal sums for food and drink

An infamous Greek restaurant renowned for charging eye-watering prices from foreign tourists charges locals a fraction of the cost.

DK Oyster in Mykonos has previously been accused of demanding huge sums from visitors to the island, with one Brit having to fork out £360 for a round of drinks and shrimp.

Other foreigners have also reported being shocked when handed their bill at the end of their meals, earning a string of scathing one-star reviews on Tripadvisor.

But locals are charged a fraction of the costs faced by those visiting the area.

One worker, known as Costas, was told he could have six oysters for just £25 - while for tourists it costs £15 per oyster.

When he baulked at paying £50 for a cocktail, waiters are said to have told him if he was a tourist it would have cost “three times” as much, according to the Mail Online.

Costas said: “They first said to me that I shouldn't come into the bar, as the prices were very high and that I might not be able to afford it.

“One waiter said it was lucky I wasn't a tourist, as my drink would've been three times the price and one of the bar staff laughed loud.

“I'm sorry that tourists are being overcharged by that bar and I will not be visiting it again as I'm unhappy about this.”

Previously Londoner Jak Kypri was enjoying a break on the Greek island when he visited the beach restaurant.

Jak said waiters didn't offer him a menu when he sat down, instead telling him what they had.

He then went on to order two tequilas, two beers and some shrimp which, when it arrived, only included "six prawns".

It left a hole in his wallet though after he was charged a whopping £360.

After he was billed, Jak asked to see the menu and saw that while the prices were higher than other restaurants on the island, they were still nowhere near the ridiculous figure he'd been handed that night.

He then alleges that staff became angry when he contested the prices.

"I told the waiter, 'no, I'm giving you 65 euros at most,' and I slammed it down on the table," he said.

"They became aggressive and started crowding around me when I questioned the astronomic and unjustified prices.

"I thought, I'm an 18-stone guy, I speak Greek, I won't be intimidated."

Another visitor known as Cheryl Lamphere, 43, was on holiday in Mykonos when she claimed her group of friends were mislead, intimated, and scammed into paying over £1,300 for two dishes, salad and bread at DK Oyster.

Cheryl claims they were briefly showed the menu before a waiter rushed the group in and forced them to order as soon as they sat down.

The group ordered one plate of calamari, one order of lobster pasta, a salad, and bread at the restaurant.

In another case back in 2019, an unwitting tourist was charged £521 for just six pieces of calamari .

Several people have reported issues on Tripadvisor.

One said: “From the word go things just didn’t seem right!

“Asked for a wine menu and nothing appears just a guy showing us a fridge playing dumb and picking us a bottle.

“Little did we know (as no menu or the Waiter didn’t speak English) the bottle was £118!”

Another said: “If you're going for after-dinner drinks DO NOT go to DK oyster bar in Mykonos. “They will screw you over and not show you a menu so they can offer a "white wine" and then present a bottle of wine that is mediocre at best and the bill will be £71.”

Another added: “This is really simple, avoid at all costs unless you want to ruin your stay on Mykonos.

“Thank God we could afford the bill. I am desperately sorry for others who walk into (and so innocently) this nightmare who can't.

“It is an awful memory that will stay with me forever. Just avoid avoid avoid!”

DK Oyster has been approached for comment.
