Manchester is home to a variety of abandoned buildings and locations that have sadly been left empty and decaying for years.
Over the last few months, the MEN has taken a look inside various abandoned buildings and locations thanks to urban explorers who have shared their eerie photos with us. They include Manchester buildings like the abandoned Stretford Memorial Hospital and Hulme Hippodrome.
Other places include the derelict St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Wigan and the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre in Rochdale. Some locations are further afield, such as the abandoned Park Hall Hotel in Lancashire and a Coffin Maker's House in Cheshire.

The photos show what’s left of the once iconic places, from decaying architecture and furniture, to abandoned belongings.
Hulme Hippodrome
The Grade II listed Hulme Hippodrome opened in 1901 but has stood empty for decades since its closure in 1986. The MEN found brilliant photos of the theatre, showing the dilapidated state of the once grand venue in 2013. The full article and all of the photos can be viewed here.
Stretford Memorial Hospital
In Greater Manchester lies the abandoned Stretford Memorial Hospital that closed in 2015 and still contains medical equipment and furniture scattered throughout. Urban explorer Jake visited the hospital recently and shared his fascinating photos on his Facebook page Exploring With Jake and with the MEN. They can be viewed in the full article here.
St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church
Founded in 1871, St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Wigan was once a grand building, but since its closure in 1995, it has been left to crumble into the earth. Urban explorer Lou (@exploring_with_lou) shared photos of her exploration there, capturing the stunning architectural features that still remain. The Market Centre
Manchester’s lost underground shopping centre was once home to everything you could possibly need, but since its closure in 1989, part of it has remained empty and decaying. Exploring With Jake visited the abandoned Market Centre and shared his photos of his findings which can be viewed in the full article here.
Church of Scientology
Deansgate is home to the empty Church of Scientology which used to be the former Duckworth’s Essence Distillery. Exploring With Jake took a trip around the Grade II listed building and captured the eeriness of the building in a collection of photographs which can be viewed in the full article here.
Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre
The Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre in Rochdale closed at the end of 2020 and has been left empty with products strewn throughout. Urban explorer Jake (Exploring With Jake) paid the once bustling venue a visit and took some brilliant photos showing mannequins and what looks to be discarded ammunition. Park Hall Hotel
A short drive from Manchester lies the abandoned Park Hall Hotel. Despite closing in 2015, furniture, guests’ belongings and food remain scattered throughout the various rooms and buildings. Exploring With Jake shared his eerie photos with the MEN which can be viewed here.
Frozen Farmhouse
Further afield lies a farmhouse frozen in time with stunningly preserved furnishings, television set and fireplace. Exploring With Jake visited the Blackpool building and even uncovered some newspapers dating back to the 1950s. His fascinating photos can be viewed in the full article here.
Coffin Maker’s House
An hour's drive from Manchester lies an abandoned coffin maker’s house. Urban explorer Jake (Exploring With Jake) visited the Cheshire house and shared his photos with the MEN which show how coffins, top hats, funeral documents and abandoned vehicles remain.
