Inside Niall Horan and Lewis Capaldi's long friendship - from Paddy's Day pints to tour of Ireland

Niall Horan and Lewis Capaldi have been on quite a tour in the last couple of days.

We saw them pop up on Grafton Street on Friday to surprise a busker with an impromptu performance.

Then, over the weekend, they appeared at the Fleadh, taking Mullingar by storm as crowds flocked to the annual music festival.

The duo have been best friends for years, which many fans may not have been aware of.

Join us as we take a trip down memory lane.

Fangirl moments

As with a lot of modern day friendships, it all began on Twitter.

Lewis had just released 'Lost on You' in 2017, which led the Mullingar man to tweet "Huge fan of this man"

Paddy's Day pints

In an interview in 2019, Niall revealed how the pair crossed paths for the first time in person, over a Paddy's Day weekend which involved alcohol and Ireland playing rugby.

He told FM104: "It started a couple of years ago when I first brought out my album (2017). I did a few shows and then I think it was March 2018 when I met Lewis for the first time.

"I had written to him on Instagram and told him I was a fan of what I'd seen so far and then (I asked him) if he'd like to come and play a few songs before me at a gig in Glasgow. We had a few pints then when Ireland played England in the Grand Slam a few years ago and then we just became really good friends."

We hadn't seen the pair snapped together until May of 2019, when Niall uploaded a picture after Lewis's record-breaking debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent.

He wrote: "This absolute king has got the fastest selling album of the year! This is a great lad with an incredible amount of talent and I’m so happy for him. Congratulations"

Lewis went one further in 2020, telling Capital FM: "We’re best friends, he loves me. In fact, next time you have him on, ask him how much he loves me. He’ll rattle on for hours,”

Potential crossover single

“We’ve got one [song] that we think is OK. Whether it gets released, I don’t know, but we’re going to have a look at it again soon,” he said during an interview with Capital FM at beginning of 2020.

"It needs to happen.”

Fleadh festivities

After busking on Grafton Street, Niall brought Lewis to his hometown of Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

The musicians were spotted on Saturday walking around the town, which is currently hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann.

Scotsman Lewis was seen holding an Irish tricolour flag as the duo strolled along the town’s main street waving at onlookers.

The pair stopped in at a number of businesses, and were also spotted posing beside the town’s large mural of native Niall.
