Inside Matt Lucas' weight loss journey as Bake Off star wows fans with slimmed down look

Matt Lucas has shocked fans in recent months after undergoing a dramatic weight loss transformation.

During various telly appearances this year, the comedian has shown off his svelte frame and slimmed down look.

As the Great British Bake Off presenter returns to our telly screens tonight for the latest series of the much loved show, fans will no doubt be impressed by his new look.

The 48-year-old comedian, actor and presenter ditched his unhealthy lifestyle in a bid to shed some weight after piling on the pounds during lockdown.

Despite being surrounded by cakes and sweet treats on Channel 4's Great British Bake Off, the TV star managed to lose a significant amount of weight and showcasing his new slimmed down look on the telly.

Fans were shocked at the Little Britain star's new appearance, so how exactly did he manage to lose weight over the past two years?

Here's a look inside Matt Lucas' weight loss journey, including what motivated him to shed the pounds and how he has even been 'thin shamed'.

During an appearance on ITV's Lorraine last year, the star cited the pandemic as his motivation for getting fit.

Host Lorraine Kelly asked: "How on Earth though, have you been in lockdown and working on Bake Off and you've lost tonnes of weight?"

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, he said: "I lost some weight, I needed to take the edge off, because I put on a lot of weight in lockdown. I've still got a bit of a tum. I'm not a skinny minnie."

The comedian added: "The one thing I need to do is get fitter, I have put on a little bit of weight, that’s my next challenge to do a bit more exercise.

"I might have to make a game of it when I go out an exercise to stay out of people's way. I don’t have a garden so I have to find a way to do that."

Matt appears to be well on track with Alan Sugar tweeting earlier in August that Matt was looking great, saying: "Wow @RealMattLucas has lost so much weight."

Matt responded to this tweet a day later and said: "Thanks. Basically I was already pretty big and then I went into a large white tent and ate most of the cake inside.

"Then I saw myself on telly and thought 'I can barely fit on the screen' and realised it was time to do something about it. That said, I have just had a Pot Noodle."

How did Matt Lucas lose weight?

In a past Instagram video, Matt revealed that he lives with a personal trainer. He said: "My housemate Jamie is a personal trainer extraordinaire."

His PT housemate, Jamie Barnard, runs Positive Mind Personal Training, which encourages a healthy lifestyle and its positive impact on mental health.

Describing what he does on his website, Jamie stated: "It has been scientifically proven that physical exercise benefits our state of mind, reduces anxiety, stress, elevates mood and improves self-esteem.

"If you are stressed due to external pressures or like me you struggle with mental illness I am here to help you commit to making the change to improve your all round wellbeing."

Matt has also had experience losing weight in the past, telling The Guardian about a health scare he experienced in 2009.

He told the paper: "I've lost a couple of stone, and I need to lose some more. It all came off in two months. My doctor said if I wasn't careful I'd end up with self-inflicted diabetes."

Matt was told to reduce his daily calorie intake to 1,500 during this period.

While it's been mostly positive responses for Matt's incredible transformation, one woman rudely thin-shimmed the funnyman.

In April of this year, Matt tweeted: "Shout out to the lady who stopped me at football today to ask me why I’ve lost weight and to inform me I look a lot older. For the first time in my life, I think I’ve just been thin-shamed."

Commenters were quick to support Matt, showering him in complements.

One said: "I wish I could loose weight and keep it off. I think you look awesome," while another joked "#humblebrag" to which Matt simply quipped: "Very".

A third added: "You look amazing, and most importantly, happy"
