Inside Kate Middleton's special bond with Camilla - dating advice and thoughtful gift

Royal fans were given a rare insight into the close bond between the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cornwall today.

The pair made a joint visit, along with Prince Charles, to East London, where they met textiles students at a centre run by the Prince's Foundation.

The two women were seen happily chatting and sharing a joke as they toured the centred and looked at ease in each other's company.

And it's no surprise they seemingly get along as both of had similar experiences of living in the normal world before having to navigate royal life after marrying their husbands.

Of course, both are also the wives of future Kings and appear to provide a supportive shoulder for their spouses.

Here we look at their close bond...

Dating advice

As the older and more experienced of the two women, Camilla's bond with Kate seems to have been forged through offering advice.

Camilla had joined the royal fold several years before Kate so knew what life was like within the Firm.

Kate had a lot to learn, and she needed to do it quickly as she took on the role of royal girlfriend while dating Prince William.

And it was Camilla who reached out to offer her future step-daughter-in-law a few words of advice, and they're very telling.

According to royal expert and biography Robert Lacey, Charles's wife had a little tip for Kate - but she struggled to follow it.

In his book, Battle of Brothers, Lacey writes: "Camilla had confided to Kate the secret of hanging on to a busy prince: fit your timetable - well, basically your whole life - around his."

However, despite Camilla's advice, Lacey claims that this wasn't really possible for Kate as William's diary was "un-fit-roundable".

Several years later, Kate's entry into the Royal Family was confirmed when she became engaged to William.

The couple immediately started planning their wedding at Westminster Abbey - and it seems Camilla was on hand to help.

According to the Daily Mail, she was spotted having a long lunch with Kate and her sister Pippa as well as Camilla's daughter Laura just weeks before the big day.

A fellow diner, sitting just two tables away, told the paper's Richard Kay me: "All four women were talking away like mad and none of the waiters could get a word in edgeways to serve their lunch. Kate looked fantastic in a very short black skirt, black opaque tights, a short jacket and boots.

"I heard Camilla saying... 'if I can give you one bit of advice...' Kate was really enjoying the moment."

Personalised gift

Kate's special bond with Camilla was also proved when the Duchess of Cornwall gifted her Kate a personalised gold bracelet.

The bracelet is thought to have been given as a wedding gift to celebrate Kate and William marrying.

The chain-link bracelet features one single charm with engravings on either side, as is reported by Hello! Magazine.

Each side of the little disc features a monogram - both Kate's and Camilla's.

On one side is the letter 'C' for Catherine, Kate's given name, with a coronet and on the other is a 'C' for Camilla and a crown.

Kate has only been seen wearing the bracelet in public a handful of times - including once at Wimbledon in 2011 and again during the Santa Barbara Polo Match as part of her official royal tour to California.

It makes up part of her fabulous jewellery collection, which features a number of other sentimental items.

Joint engagements

In recent times, there have been several royal engagements that both Camilla and Kate have attended together.

Last year, the pair, along with their husbands attended the premiere of the James Bond movie No Time To Die together.

While last June, they also took part in a fun engagement in Cornwall with the Queen, where Camilla helped Her Majesty cut a cake using a ceremonial sword.

No upstaging

Another day that saw the two royal women together was Remembrance Sunday during the service at the Cenotaph.

At the last minute, the Queen had to pull out of attending due to a sprained back and when they took the position on the Foreign Office balcony, Kate stood centre stage with Camilla and Sophie Wessex at her side.

Despite the positioning making Kate seem the more senior, body language expert Judi James said it appeared that Camilla was comfortable standing to the side.

She told the Express : "With the Queen sadly missing from the royal balcony this year there was a very intriguing and possibly significant re-shuffle of the royal wives, with Kate emerging looking very much like the highest-ranking woman in the group, not just by taking the central position between Camilla and Sophie but by her non-verbal signals as she stood in that spot.

“With Camilla next in line to the role of Queen [consort] it might have been expected for her to take that middle position between the two younger women.

"Camilla appears satisfied with her role."

However, that's not to say Kate isn't aware of Camilla's hierarchy in the family, according to royal expert Ingrid Seward.

She told the Mirror: "Prince Charles is not even King yet and the Royals are very careful about not upstaging each other. Kate will be keen not to upstage Camilla.

“She is aware of hierarchy and that it is Camilla’s turn."
