Inside Kate Middleton's diet - from family meals to food Prince William made to 'impress her'

If you've ever wondered what diet fuels Kate Middleton's life as a busy royal and mum of three, the 40-year-old has shared glimpses over the years of what she and her family like to eat.

To be sure, palace staffers are on hand to look after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but Kate has said she's a hands-on mum that makes cooking a family activity. What's more, the duchess has previously revealed the dishes Prince William wooed her with - and the homemade food she gifted the Queen.

Kate was modest about her cooking abilities back in a fundraising gala in 2016, saying: "William has to put up with my cooking most of the time." To which he apparently quipped: "It's the reason I'm so skinny."

While preparing a roulade alongside Mary Berry in a TV special, Kate told the baking legend that she "really enjoys" cooking with her children as it teaches them to be creative and as "independent as possible".

The duchess shared a sweet memory from the early days of her relationship with William during the 'A Berry Royal Christmas' programme. Mary had asked: "Does William ever cook for you?"

Kate replied: "He sometimes does, Mary. He's very good at breakfast. University days he used to cook all sorts of meals, I think that was when he was trying to impress me, Mary! Things like bolognese sauce, and things like that."

Cooking for Prince William and the Queen

When it comes to family dinners, Prince William's favourite dinner of roast chicken is reportedly one of Kate's go-to dishes.

"In the evenings she indulges her hobby of cooking William's favourite supper, roast chicken," wrote royal expert Katie Nicholls in Vanity Fair during the couple's early years of marriage. "They are reported to own a sausage-maker, and she has started making homemade pots of fruit jam while her husband is at work.

Among the recipients of Kate's foodie gifts is the Queen. During her first Christmas with the royal family, Kate revealed that she'd made a batch of chutney for Her Majesty. She recounted the story in an ITV documentary marking the Queen's 90th birthday.

Kate said: "I can remember being at Sandringham for the first time at Christmas. And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present. I was thinking, 'Gosh, what should I give her?'

"I thought back to what would I give my own grandparents and I thought, 'I'll make her something', which could have gone horribly wrong, but I decided to make my granny's recipe of chutney."

Healthy fruit and veg

One source told the Mail Online that the duchess blends her own green smoothies. She reportedly mixes kale, spirulina, matcha, spinach, romaine, blueberries together for a wholesome drink in the morning and afternoon.

Back in 2014, the publication also reported that Kate is a fan of watermelon salads, gazpacho, goji berries, tabbouleh and almond milk.

BarBend claims the mum of three is a fan of watermelon mixed with avocado, onion, cucumber, and feta cheese for a perfect mix of sweet and savoury.

The couple seem to be fond of healthy vegetarian meals. According to Chef Raghu Deora, who was responsible for cooking for William and Kate during their stay at the Taj Mahal Palace in 2021, says he served the couple vegetable kebabs and lentil curry.

Royal reporter Victoria Murphy quoted him as saying: "It is all vegetarian because I was told that was what they preferred."

A favourite snack that runs in the family

When the duchess was pregnant with Princess Charlotte in 2018, she told a child at Great Ormond Street Hospital that she used to eat "lots and lots" of olives when she was little.

And it appears her daughter has followed in her footsteps. A year later whilst visiting children's mental health charity Place2Be, Kate shared that Princess Charlotte loves olives, according to reporter Rebecca English.

In the same appearance, Kate said she encourages George and Charlotte to cook with her - adding that they made cheesy pasta together recently.
