Inside haunted jail where murderers were caged - and you can now stay as hotel guest

Fancy a night in a slammer? Don't worry, breakfast and WiFi are included.

No, you're not being banged up after a post-night out scuffle got out of hand. This prison is considerably more voluntary than the cells at your local nick.

Ottawa Jail Hostel is one of the world's only converted former prisons where you can stay the night after being transformed into a hostel with cells converted into plush rooms bearing the names of those incarcerated there.

Once housing notorious inmates hanged for their roles in heinous murders, the jailhouse has been lovingly restored and refurbished to welcome weary travellers in Canada's capital city.

The prison was built in 1862 to provide cells for inmates closer to Ottawa's courthouse.

Over the years, it's housed perpetrator's of some of Canada's most shocking crimes, including the assassination of Irish-Canadian politician Thomas D'Arcy McGee for which gunman Patrick J. Whelan was executed in front of 5,000 people right outside.

Legend has it that Whelan's ghost is one of many that still roam the building's corridors, with guests having reported seeing him at the ends of their beds.

Other notable inmates included Eugene Larment, who killed an Ottawa police detective. The jail's original gallows from which the condemned were hanged remain intact today.

The building was used as a working prison for over a century until it was eventually closed in 1972.

In that time, hundreds of prisoners - both male and female - and children were crammed into inhumane conditions in filthy cells, their crimes ranging from pickpocketing to cold-blooded murders. It's thought those who were mentally-ill were also confined here.

Later excavations of the jail revealed numerous unmarked graves thought to be those of inmates who died in the appalling conditions.

It's thought the spirits of those denied a formal burial still haunt Ottawa Jail, and the location has been visited by numerous ghost-hunting teams and TV crews overs the years.

Nowadays, the hostel is a hip and fresh hangout for younger travellers who can request a tour of the former death row and solitary confinement cells which still have carvings made by inmates at the end of their sanity.

The hostel's courtyard where inmates would be let out on exercise is now an outdoor seating area for guests to share a drink in the summer, while rooms have been updated to feel less like a cell.

All rooms meanwhile are signposted with short snippets of history about your room's previous guests. Because nothing says 'sweet dreams' like falling asleep knowing a cold-hearted criminal slept under the same ceiling.
