Inside Christy Dignam's love story with wife Kathryn who made him feel like he 'won the Lotto' when they met

Christy Dignam was married for more than 37 years to the "love of his life" Kathryn.

The couple are parents to daughter, Kiera, who is also a singer. He has two grandsons, Cian and Jake and a granddaughter, Ava.

Dignam said he “won the lotto” when he met Kathryn.

“I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, she’s a very lucky girl,” he joked.

“I’ve made loads of dodgy decisions in my life, loads of mistakes I’ve made, and I don’t regret them because I’m happy where I’m at now.

“But one decision I feel I won the lotto is when I met Kathryn. At the start of Aslan, we went over to Australia, and we loved it over there, we were only 21.

"When we got back, she said she would take care of the bills, ‘you go full time with the band and we’ll see how it goes’ – she has always supported me and she’s still there.

“You meet all these people through your life who you think of as friends and there’s a lot of bulls**t out there. Family is what it’s really about, but a true friend is like gold dust.

“She’s like a buffer to the world for me, it’s amazing to have somebody that you love enough and trust enough.”

But Christy previously revealed that he was left homeless for six months after Kathryn split up with the star.

The Aslan legend admitted that he was "messing around", which caused the breakup, and he needed to find somewhere else to live.

He stayed with friends for a while before it became apparent that he had nowhere permanent to live.

Christy said: "When I was messing around, I split up with Kathryn, so for about six months I was homeless myself.

"I was kind of doing a bit of couch surfing that would last for a couple of weeks before people would obviously get a pain in their a**e with me sleeping on their couch."

He told the Sunday World at the time: "Then I was totally homeless, so I know what it was like. It's a horrible place to be."

"I’ve never said this before but I made a load of bad decisions in my life but I always thank God I married Kathryn," he previously told Brendan Courtney on RTÉ One.

"Without her I don’t think I would have survived physically.

"I remember thinking if she behaved the way I behaved - if we switched - I don't think I could have tolerated what she tolerated. I don’t think I’d have been big enough to do that. She’s amazing."

In 2021, Christy revealed he and Kathryn got to know each other again while in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He told RSVP Magazine at the time: "Kathryn's a hairdresser so the two of us were out of work together. It was like we got to know each other again.

"When you're living your life, working and gigging, you can let the little things slide so it was kind of cool to get to know her again."
