Inside BBC Scotland's Home of the Year's incredible Edinburgh properties

BBC Scotland's Home of the Year will be taking a trip to the capital, Edinburgh and the Lothians in order to find yet another finalist to add to the three already chosen.

So far, Lorne Cottage in Fort William, The Ostro Passive House in Kippen, The Pastel House in Orkney and Firestation House in Hawick have made the finals for Scotland's Home of the Year.

A Victorian Terrace goes head-to-head with a New Town flat in Edinburgh and there’s also competition from an 18th century cottage in Gorebridge.

They start by visiting a Victorian Terrace in Morningside, Edinburgh, which has been home to Ella, husband Rory and their children Daisy and Arthur for the last four years.

Spread over three floors, the traditional townhouse has five bedrooms, two family bathrooms and a stunning open plan kitchen.

As well as period features, the family home boasts a colourful palette and plush interiors such as velvet curtains, bright and bold wallpaper and modern touches including a newly refurbished kitchen.

The next home is also in Edinburgh, this time in the New Town. Mike and James bought the Georgian B listed tenement flat together and, since moving in, they’ve been busy furnishing the home.

The second floor flat in the centre of Edinburgh is full of period features including curved walls and doors – typical of New Town style homes – which have proved challenging for the homeowners to find suitable furniture.

Finally this week, the judges visit Bellsmains in Midlothian, home to David and Jean, their dog Monty and cat Oscar.

The property dates back to around 1760 and, over the 40 years David and Jean have lived in Bellsmains, they’ve extended on three different occasions.

Set in a rural landscape, Bellsmains marries together traditional alongside modern interiors, with views of the garden acting as focal points throughout the home.

Each week, the judges mark the shortlisted properties out of ten but only one from the Lothians will go through from the nine regions to the grand finale at Glasgow’s House for an Art Lover.

You can tune into episode six of Scotland's Home of the Year on Monday, May 9 on BBC One and BBC Scotland at 8:30pm.
