The inquests into the deaths of two teenagers who died in a crash at a petrol station in Swansea have been opened. Kaitlyn Davies and Ben Rogers, both 19, died when the car they were travelling in crashed into Northway Petrol station in Bishopston, Swansea, late in the evening of Tuesday, May 31, 2022.
Two other people travelling in the car, a 17-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy, were rushed to hospital for emergency care. As of June 16, 2022, the pair remain in hospital receiving medical care. It's understood the 17-year-old girl is still in a critical condition and the 17-year-old boy remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Swansea Coroners' Court opened the inquests into the deaths of Mr Rogers and Miss Davies. At the hearing, held at The Guildhall in Swansea on Friday, June 10, 2022, the court heard the brief circumstances of the collision in which the pair died and the date was set for when the final inquest will take place. Alongside HM Coroner for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, Colin Phillips, police investigating officer PC Alun Efstathiou from South Wales Police serious collision investigation unit was also in attendance at the inquest opening. The hearing confirmed that Ben James Rogers, aged 19, and Kaitlyn Rebekah Davies, aged 19, both died in the early hours of June 1, 2022, at Northway Road, Bishopston, Swansea. Mr Rogers, from Landore, was a student at the time of his death whilst Miss Davies, from Blaenymaes, was a part-time warehouse operative.
The inquest opening record goes on to briefly explain what is known so far about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The "brief circumstances of death" for Mr Rogers are: "Sometime just prior to 11.15pm on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, a road traffic collision occurred on Northway, Bishopston, Swansea, involving a red-coloured Alfa Romeo Mito containing four occupants.
"The exact circumstances and cause of the collision, which appears to have only involved this one vehicle, is still the subject of a police investigation. One of the occupants was Mr Ben Rogers who suffered serious injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. (1.07am on June 1, 2022). The provisional date for the full inquests into the deaths of Miss Davies and Mr Rogers has been set as November 10, 2022. Miss Davies' inquest is expected to take place at 2.30pm and Mr Rogers', at 10.30am the same day.
