A coroner will examine a spectator's death at the Northern Territory's Finke Desert Race after a competing vehicle struck him.

Nigel Harris, 60, was fatally struck by the vehicle when it veered off a dirt track about 35km from the finish line near Alice Springs on June 14, 2021.

He died at the scene.

A male spectator in his 50s was also injured in the incident along with the female navigator of the vehicle, also aged in her 50s.

The Tatts Finke Desert Race is an off-road multi-terrain two-day race for motorbikes, cars, buggies and quad bikes through desert country from Alice Springs to Aputula/Finke.

Held annually on the Queen's Birthday long weekend in June, it's one of the biggest annual sporting events in the NT.

The race is on one of the most difficult off-road remote courses in the world.

The three-day inquest in the Alice Springs Local Court starts on August 23.
