Innocent relative of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch changes infamous surname amid safety fears

An innocent relative of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch legally changed their name days after Hutch was extradited to Ireland, it has been revealed.

The Star has learned that the relative, who has no connection to criminality, legally changed their name following The Monk’s charge over the Regency Hotel murder of David Byrne.

The name change comes after Hutch’s nephews Patrick and Derek ‘Del Boy’ Hutch legally changed their names in recent years.

Sources say that while this relative has no connections to crime, they may have concerns about their surname and close relation to Hutch — who remains a top target of the ruthless Kinahan cartel.

The person, who we are not identifying, is an ordinary tax paying citizen, who happens to share The Monk’s now notorious surname.

As we previously revealed, several family members have had their name changed over the years, amid security concerns.

And several Hutch family members have been warned over the years of the potential threat to their lives.

The latest name change is understood to have occurred via deed poll — just days after Hutch was flown into Baldonnel Airport in a military aircraft, and brought before a late night sitting of Dublin’s Special Criminal Court.

There, Hutch was formally charged with the murder of David Byrne, a Kinahan cartel associate who was gunned down in the lobby of Dublin’s Regency Hotel on February 5, 2016.

The killing was part of a deadly feud between the Kinahan cartel and the so-called Hutch gang, which has seen 18 people killed.

Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch is currently awaiting trial before the three-judge Special Criminal Court later this year — after losing his case to have it heard before a jury.

He now remains in custody in Dublin’s Wheatfield Prison.

Hutch’s sensational arrest came after officers tracked him and his wife down to a pizza restaurant in Spain — months after they first tried to execute a European Arrest Warrant.

After being flown into Dublin, Hutch was first transported under armed guard to Portlaoise Prison, arriving at the maximum security facility at around midnight.

There, officers completed the necessary paperwork to authorise transporting Hutch from Portlaoise, where all Special Criminal Court prisoners normally go, to Wheatfield Prison.

Following the signing of papers, Hutch was then transported back to Dublin in the middle of the night — arriving at Wheatfield at around 2am.

The Monk is now understood to be sharing the same landing as co-accused Jonathan Dowdall — the former Sinn Fein councillor.

Dowdall (43) has also been charged at the non-jury Special Criminal Court with the murder of Kinahan cartel gangster David Byrne at the Regency Hotel on February 5, 2016.

Also on the wing is Hutch associate Glen Kavanagh (46) who is serving a 12 year sentence after pleading guilty to robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm at Woodbine Park Post Office, Blackrock, on January 19, 2016. Kavanagh fired eight shots from a semi-automatic pistol during the robbery of the post office. Gerry Hutch’s detention in Ireland comes on foot of a lengthy investigation.
