A live broadcast from Pennsylvaina's State Correctional Institution Huntingdon took an unusual turn Tuesday night as inmates shouted their support for Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The novel interview format came about on NewsNation's program Banfield, as inmates called out from their cells and turned lights on and off in response to the live broadcast. They also shouted complaints about prison conditions and demanded Mangione's release.
"Luigi's conditions suck. Free Luigi," they yelled to reporter Alex Caprariello.
Mangione, 26, is currently housed in a single occupant cell and does not have access to a television, inmates added.
Mangione faces the possibility of being extradited to New York, where he is accused of using a "ghost gun" to fatally shoot Thompson near a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4.
Authorities say Mangione's fingerprints match those found on a water bottle near the crime scene, BBC reported. He was arrested Friday in Pennsylvania, where police found him with a firearm, suppressor, and a 262-word manifesto detailing his motivations. The gun he had on him matches shell casings from the crime scene, police said on Wednesday.
Mangione's extradition remains delayed as Pennsylvania pursues a governor's warrant, a process that could take up to 30 days. Meanwhile, Mangione continues to fight extradition, calling the charges against him "completely unjust."
