Injured Uddingston cyclist appeals to hit-and-run driver after horror incident

An Uddingston cyclist is appealing for help in tracking down the hit-and-run driver who injured him on a busy stretch of Hamilton road at the weekend.

Scott Rennie has been left in considerable pain and needed emergency treatment after being hit by a white BMW on the B7071 Bothwell Road, at its junction with Caird Street, just before 11am on Saturday, August 6.

The 40-year-old had been enjoying a cycle and was returning home when the vehicle struck him side on as it turned up on to Caird Street, towards Hamilton retail park.

Thankfully Scott was helped by several motorists and passers-by, including an off-duty nurse, who witnessed the incident and stopped to help and call the emergency services.

Now, Scott is keen to trace the woman responsible and indeed the several helpers who came to his aid.

He told Lanarkshire Live : "I was in the left hand lane of the dual carriageway heading along in the direction of Hamilton racecourse. At the busy crossroad traffic lights at Caird Street, the woman in the white BMW entered into the right hand lane and cut out in front of me at the lights and hit me side on, throwing me from my bike into the centre of the road.

"It was certainly no skim that she could have been oblivious to either, it was a full on impact. There was a white car driven by a male in front of her who saw it happening and he stopped and confirmed it was a woman in a BMW who had turned up towards the retail park."

Scott was also helped by two staff members from a nearby restaurant who ran to his aid as well as another man who tended to his wounds and two police officers who were around the corner working at a community event.

A nurse on her way to work also witnessed the accident and stopped to patch up Scott's injuries with dressing until an ambulance arrived who tended to him at the scene.

However, things went from bad to worse for Scott when later that evening he took seriously unwell, suffering shock and a potential seizure in his home and was taken to Monklands Hospital where he underwent several scans and was hooked up to medication and kept in overnight.

Scott added: "At the scene I was treated in the ambulance but opted to go home as [I was] a little humiliated by the whole thing.

"My friend came over a few hours later to stay the night and keep an eye on me but around 7pm I became unresponsive and an ambulance was called. Unfortunately there were none available and my friend had to take me to hospital himself where I was seen instantly at A&E and taken for tests, a CT scan, X-ray and given morphine, an IV drip and a bed.

"My hands and feet were swollen, my pelvis was suspected to be injured along with my shoulder and I was given pain relief and crutches and sent home with most likely muscular tendon and internal bruising injuries. I was in a state of utter shock."

The police have logged an incident report and say their enquiries into tracing the woman are "ongoing" but Scott has decided to take matters into his own hands and hopefully track down the driver and helpers himself.

He continued: "The police officers and ambulance staff along with the NHS nurse and witnesses were all absolutely amazing at the scene and I would love to track them down to extend my sincere gratitude for their support and assistance.

"I'm keen for the driver to come forward as well and take responsibility for her actions in hitting me and taking off like nothing had happened. She simply can't not know that she hit a cyclist!"

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 11.05 am on Saturday, August 6, police received a report of a male cyclist having been struck by a car in Bothwell Road at the junction of Caird Street, Hamilton.

“The 40-year-old cyclist was treated at the scene by Scottish Ambulance Service.

“The car involved in the incident drove off and police enquiries are ongoing to trace the vehicle and driver.”
